Helambu is another popular region at the northern end of the Melamchi Khola Valley. A week long trek begins west of Sundarijal at the end of the road connected with Kathmandu. You will climb through the wet, subtropical forest and walk onto Mulkharka (1768m) a scattered Tamang village. The trail descends through a pleasant Oak forest, past some houses to a flat part of the trail. In clear weather you can have a good view of the Himalayan mountain range to the north and in spring the forest is seen Rhododendrons in full bloom all over. This trek remains at reasonably low elevations, there is little chance of altitude problem but you should be prepared for cold and possible snow at Tharepati during the winter. There are fewer trekkers visiting Helumbu than in the Everest, Annnapurna or Langtang regions.
