Annapurna Sanctuary is a high glacial basin which looks like an oval-shaped plateau lying at an altitude of over 4000 m, and is surrounded by the Annapurna mountain range. Trekking to Annapurna Sanctuary is relatively shorter as compared to Annapurna full circuit trek andDhaulagiri round trek in the Annapurna region. It can be completed within 12 days. Annapurna Sanctuary trek is also known as Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek. The journey to the Annapurna Sanctuary kicks off from Pokhara with a one-hour drive to Phedi, Then, you will follow the trail uphill through the Modi Khola gorge onto lowland bamboo forests and rhododendrons until you reach a huge rock overhung known as Hinku Cave., When you enter into the huge amphitheatre, you will find yourself enclosed by a solid wall of snow capped peaks, some are higher than 7,000m tall, which include Annapurna I, II, III, IV and Machhapuchhre (Fish tailed mountain). If you visit the Annapurna Sanctuary during the good weather season especially in the fall and spring, you can expect clear mornings and evenings and a glowing panoramic view of snow-capped peaks and starry skies. The trail has numerous ascents and descents, but offers a wide variety of superb landscapes from low elevation to glacial basin, cultural diversity and diverse flora and fauna. When you make excursion to Poonhill you will see beautiful sunrise view over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. The Gurung villages and frequent stops at tea-shop dotted along the way give unique cultural experience. Like the Sherpa dominant in Everest region, Gurung are in Annapurna and Limbus’ are in Kanchanjunga. Ever since the route to the sanctuary was discovered by Col. Robert in 1964, trekking to Annapurna Sanctuary has become the center of attraction among the trekkers.
